Date: Thursday, 21 June 2018

Time: 2pm – 4:30pm

Venue: Shelter 2, Kuala Lumpur.

As part of her personal mission to reach out to younger women to inspire, empower and educate them on matters close to her heart, Miss Universe Malaysia 2018, Jane Teoh in collaboration with Komuniti MyEG recently conducted a community service workshop titled ‘Smart, Savvy and Stylish’ for the teenage residents of Shelter 2.
SHELTER, a registered welfare organisation, has been in existence since 1981 to help abused, abandoned, neglected or at-risk children. Shelter 2 is a home for teenage girls from 13 to 18 years. The girls here receive knowledge and training skills to help develop their impendence, and guide them towards self-reliance and assurance to face the future so they can succeed in their chosen fields.

Jane kick-started the session with the eight teens from Shelter 2 by introducing an ‘Ice-Breaking Game’ where participants were each asked to draw a picture of something they like or enjoyed doing. Each girl then went on to explain the reason why they chose the drawing.

Jane next shared her brief journey from being a student in Penang, to her path which led to her being crowned Miss Universe Malaysia 2018. She also offered some smart study tips which helped her excel in college where she received a scholarship to pursue an undergraduate degree.

Jane then touched upon savvy living tips, where she shared how she handled time management when it comes to balancing her part time modelling jobs and her studies. Additionally she spoke about her personal experience in dealing with cyberbullying, and how to overcome criticism and brickbats as a public figure.

Lastly, under the Stylish theme, she spoke about the importance of self-care, self-love and staying positive in order to build one’s self-confidence and self-esteem. This was followed by an interactive grooming session where the girls got the opportunity to play with make-up generously sponsored by Lancôme, and a brief catwalk session guided by Jane to help the girls walk with the correct posture and with confidence.

The afternoon ended with refreshments being served followed by a photo session. The girls each received a complimentary self-care pouch containing some grooming products. Komuniti MyEG also sponsored groceries and stationeries worth RM1,600 for the home.

Attendees: Ms Jane Teoh, Miss Universe Malaysia 2018, Mr Cheok Hoong Poh, Chief Operating Officer of SHELTER, representatives of Komuniti MyEG – the CSR arm of MYE.G. Services Berhad and representatives of Miss Universe Malaysia Organization (MUMO).
